User Research
User research was a vital component in creating a language learning application. The goals of this research was understand how to enhance the users experience by integrating personalized, adaptive learning paths and engaging multimedia content. Conducting research also helped identify what the leading standard is within the industry.
Five users who are currently learning languages were interviewed regarding their experiences and preferences.
Interview
Questions:
What languages are you currently learning or have learned in the past?
What motivates you to learn a new language?
How do you stay motivated throughout your learning journey?
Do you prefer structured lessons or more flexible, self paced learning?
Do you use language learning apps, websites, classes, or other resources? Which apps do you use?
How much time do you dedicate to language learning on this app each day or week?
Do you have a specific routine or schedule for learning on the app?
If you had a magic wand and if you could change anything about the ed-tech industry what would change?
A competitive analysis was conducted between Wordwell’s direct competitors, Memrise, Babbel and Duolingo. These are the most popular app’s in the language industry.
Competitive Analysis
Key Findings:
Memrise excels in content variety and user generated courses with strong gamification, though it can be complex and lacks in depth grammar explanations. Duolingo offers extensive free content and engaging gamification with a wide range of languages, but it can be simplistic and repetitive. Babbel focuses on practical conversation and structured lessons with comprehensive grammar and real life scenarios but requires a subscription, offers fewer languages, and has less gamification. To differentiate Wordwell will need to combine expert designed content, balance vocabulary and conversation practice, incorporate cultural insights, ensure accessibility with free content, and regularly update based on user feedback.
